This guide is a quick tip on how to make browsing the web on firefox on an older laptop smoother and more enjoyable. If you are a rare being who browses the web with only one tab open, then you don't need this — this guide is harm-reduction for the rest of us who open lots of tabs, for better or for worse.
In short, install these two browser extensions:
-- [Auto Tab Discard](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/auto-tab-discard/) — a browser extension that suspends tabs after you open a certain number
-- [LoadTabOnSelect 3](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/loadtabonselect3/) — a browser extension that causes any new tab not to be loaded until you actually click to open it

The author (swim), a serial tab opener, and user of a lenovo x230 laptop from [mostlyharmless](https://mostlyharmless.io/), found that before installing these extensions, while browsing the internet their laptop would frequently become sluggish and even need to be force-restarted. Afterwards, it has been smooth sailing since then, and their browser is full of suspended tabs, waiting for their time in the sun.
