      1 **Permatechnology** refers to permacultural approaches to technology.
      2 Permacomputing can be thought of as a subset of permatechnology, which in
      3 turn can be thought as the technological aspect of permaculture. The concept
      4 of permatechnology can therefore be used as a linking piece that provides a
      5 larger context for permacomputing.

      7 Computing is somewhat peculiar when compared to e.g. transportation
      8 technology: airplanes are not many orders of magnitude faster or more
      9 energy-efficient than sailships, but computers can have this kind of
     10 contrast to manual calculation and data processing. Computing therefore
     11 constitutes an interesting extremity of the technological possibility space.

     13 Another difference is that practically all production of computers is
     14 currently based on somewhat destructive and highly centralized processes, so
     15 a lot of rethinking and rebuilding is required for the type of technology in
     16 general.

     18 All of these peculiarities give permacomputing somewhat unique challenges
     19 compared to most other types of permatechnology.
